"It was a stark town with little to do and few places to see."
by MD

Eliza searched and searched for something to amuse her. When a neighbor told her of the museum, she seized on the opportunity to visit.  However, she felt the need to disguise herself, lest any of her new friends accuse her of putting on airs. So she wrapped herself completely in veils and proceeded to the museum. It was there, behind the glass case, that she found an item to worship. After all, it was a stark town with little to do and few places to see. But the inscribed vase filled her needs for focus and an escape from boredom.

With reverence, she knelt before the ancient vase and breathed a prayer of thanks for release from the confines of the rural landscape. Then, with a sigh and a wink (of course unseen behind her veiled countenance), she pulled the scimitar from her belt and drove it into her heart.

“They bought the house at auction and felt quite pleased with the price”
 by RC

Harry and Marge were penny-pinchers, but they were not your average penny-pinchers; they had bottles all over the apartment with pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and even paper money stuffed into them. They called this their “savings account.” Well, since the interest rate was less than one percent at the local savings and loan, it may have made sense. Somehow, even money from other currencies found its way into the bottles, because Harry and Marge were also travelers. They had coins from Canada, Mexico, some of the pacific islands, Japan—you name it.

Although they traveled a lot, Harry and Marge wanted to eventually settle down in a nice house of their own—maybe one by the beach. Their opportunity finally presented itself in the form of a house auction.

Well, as for counting the money, and eliminating the coins that were not legal tender in the Bahamas, that would have been a major undertaking, so they didn’t bother. They entered their bid. And, wonder of wonders, they won! Yes, they bought the house at auction and felt quite pleased with the price.

The bank demanded payment by the end of the week, and Harry and Marge rented a cargo plane to take it all down there. The bank personnel were quite amazed and it took all of their people to cart in the bottles. They really did not want to do the counting, but the house was on an island which was in danger of sinking into the sea at any time, so they allowed this unusual form of payment. Then they gave Harry and Marge the address.

“Rules, anyway, get you only so far”
 by CG

Thomas was putting the finishing touches on his time machine, wiping down the propeller blade meticulously, a yellow-toothed smile gleaming from a one-sided grin in the reflection of the cold metal precipice.  “Back to before she said no,” he whispered.  “Finally, it is finished.  They never believed I could do it.”  Thomas had been working on the machine for 20 years in his parents’ basement since that day, abandoning all hope of going into the world and being the son they wanted him to be like his brother Timmy, the stock trader.  “Rules, anyway, get you only so far,” he smirked, Donning his heavy UV blocking smock, and goggles, wrenching up on the knob and tucked himself in.  Sealing the door, he initiated the switch and held his breath, his body shaking furiously as the heat engulfed him.

When he awoke, he stood in a forest.  There were the two young men and the girl.  Timmy, with his varsity jacket, perfect gleaming blonde hair, every hair in perfect place, was smirking as he stood over his frail younger brother below.  “You’ll never amount to anything, Tommy, just give up.  C’mon Trish!”  He called.

“Trish!”  The young boy called meekly “Come back!”

She turned her head and walked away, “Sorry Tommy, but no”

"Keep the system as simple as possible, was the mantra of the organization."
by CM

I stood there in the blowing rain as your casket was lowered into the hole in the National Cemetery. As if by chance or perhaps not, an Air Force jet flew overhead. I remember you laughing  as I voiced my concern about you being sent as a pilot to Vietnam. You lived a charmed life. "Keep the system as simple as possible," was the mantra of the Air Force organization. You said I'll just fly around and then come home. Simple.

Yes, you came home. You came home in a box. Simple? I lowered my head as the flag was presented to me.

"No one could quite recall how the incident started, but everyone remembered how it ended."
by TNT

He was the mightiest Chieftain on the island. Nobody questioned him - his word was Law. When he threw his nets all this fish wanted to climb in, to be consumed by him and become part of his great physique. Only one creature on the island defied him, and he could never catch it. It was a rock fish that glowed in many colors. It was a supernatural fish, but the Chief could never find it when he fished - he only saw it when he surfed. He imagined that it laughed at him, and this irked the Chief.

No one could quite recall how the incident began, but everyone remembered how it ended. The Chief was surfing and the rock fish was laughing at the Chief when he fell off the surfboard trying to catch the rock fish. He fell on the edge of his surf board and it knocked him out cold.

The chief was so angry he spent every day looking for the rock fish, but the canny creature changed himself by magic into a tourist. The Chief never saw the original fish, but the tourist bought the island and turned it into a big resort. that was the end of the Chief's importance. The rock fish (who was magical) made himself a big tycoon. No-one ever knew what happened to the Chief (who he turned into a large rock fish)

"Using a comprehensive set of telescope observations, astronomers found that the Universe is dying."
by GS

Using a comprehensive set of telescope observations, astronomers found that the Universe is dying. This did not come as news to Sneaky Pete, who had been watching the neighborhood crumble  from his window for years. He had gotten blase about the whole thing since he knew he could do nothing about it. As long as he could stay warm, dry, and fed, he was content. Others were not so resigned. Sneaky's feeder, Alicia, grew frantic, not comprehending that the universe's imminent demise was still a few million years in the future. People would do well to adopt the cat's complacency and enjoy the little bit of time that remains.

"The tune got stuck in his head in the morning and he hummed it throughout the day, to the annoyance of everyone around him."
by RMAF

The tune got stuck in his head in the morning and he hummed it throughout the day, to the annoyance of everyone around him: "Ohh, I am King Buck of the Forest! I am a god to all the female deers near and far! La Lada La Whoopeee I am King Buck of the Forest!"

"Your letter came today and I want to thank you for the gifts which were enclosed."
by BG

Seymore Snail was delighted. He always preferred the shade to sunshine. He glided along in a wonderful mood all day long, leaving happy trails of slime on the leaves that he came across in his path. It was dewy today as it had rained the evening before. The autumn weather had been off and on this year. He was the only snail that had stuck around. The rest of his friends had gone to Florida already. In the afternoon, he wrote to his friend Sidney. The Umbrella was wonderfully handy. Your letter came today and I want to thank you for the gift which was enclosed, he wrote.
