“Can’t you just relax about it? Can’t you just let go?”
by CC

Martha stood outside the waffle house and waved goodbye as the wagon rolled down the Alaskan road towards the lower 48 and freedom. At least that’s how Martha thought of it. She hated the cold and the bears and moose and the dirty town. But it wasn’t Martha rolling away to freedom. It was Bertha, Martha’s older sister. Martha kept a tight little grin on her face but inside she seethed with jealousy.

Gloria came out of the waffle house and stood behind Martha, watching the wagon jolt across the ruts as it headed south. “I guess that’s about that,” she said to Martha. “You’re handling it pretty well.”

They both went inside to stir up the batter for their famous waffles. It wasn’t hard to be famous in Moosehorn Alaska, population 45. But they were about the most famous people in town. Everyone thought it was a great scandal when Bertha took umbrage over repainting the sign to read “Three Girls Waffle House.” But they really didn’t have that kind of money. And the guy who painted it was eaten by a bear last winter. Nobody else in town could draw a straight line.

The problem was Gloria. Bertha disliked Gloria on sight and could not understand why Martha hired her. She thought perhaps Martha hired her just to make her crazy over the sign. Martha used to shout at Bertha “Can’t you just relax about it? Can’t you just let it go?” But no, Bertha couldn’t, and now she was gone.

Suddenly Martha hurled the pot of waffle batter across the room, knocking their lone customer, Albert Whaley, right off his stool in the process. She ran out the door after the wagon, which had not yet rounded the bend. Gloria, pragmatic to the core, went outside and took down the sign. She used shoe blacking to adjust the sign and pretty soon “Girl Waffle House” was born. Satisfied, she went back inside to clean off Mr. Whaley’s head and mix some more batter.

"We need a lawyer, he thought. We can't handle this by ourselves."
by BG

Carl Potter, Harry's cousin thrice removed, showed up one day at the Weasley's burrow during a meeting of the Order of the Phoenix. No one had ever met him before. James had never even mentioned that he had any family. He was very polite and articulated his request and concerns quite nicely. But Harry and the members of the Order were not receptive to what he wanted and why he appeared after no contact with Harry whatsoever in all the years since his parents' death. They did not trust him, but they wanted to leave decisions to Harry. They felt that the invisibility cloak James left to Harry should not be given up. Harry agreed, but felt that the situation would become confrontational. We need a lawyer, he thought. We can't handle this by ourselves.

"You've been lucky all along, she sighed. I wish I was that lucky."
by TNT

"Oh my!' she said. "It must have been awful!"

"Oh yes, it was the Siamese kitten this time. She is a lot faster than old Goldie - who couldn't catch a parakeet in a cage - not that she would dare - you know how the Missus is! She'd string Goldie up by the claws. But the kitten is truly dangerous and she doesn't heed the Missus because she is the favorite right now. So cute everyone dotes on her."

"We must find a way to repel her attacks on us."

"We'll call Wilbur - he is on the track team: The fastest mouse in our district. They say he is practising for the Mouse Olympics."

"Really? That's swell. Let's call him today."

"O.K. So far we have been lucky all along with Old Goldie who sleeps all the time."

"Oh yes, she sleeps 40 hours a day, especially in the sunshine."

"But, Sweetie, there are only 24 hours in a day and half of them are dark."

"It seems like 40 hours to me."

"Maybe Goldie is on barbituates?"

"What's that?"

"Those are pills."

"Oh. I bet she likes Valiums too!"

"Well, anyhow, we must call up Wilbur and see what he can do."

"What can he do?"

Two days later...

Wilber ran in front of the kitten. He barely escaped but the kitten was going at a speed that she couldn't stop and hit the kitchen wall full tilt. She knocked herself out and when she awoke Kitty was wonky. Kitty staggered about shaking his head. The mice walked right by with a cheese ball. Kitty didn't notice.

"Well, you've been lucky all along," she sighed to Wilbur.

"I wish I was that lucky," he squeaked. "It  was a close one.

"I feel as if I've known you my whole life," he said, "and I want to know you forever."
by RMAF

World War II was a terrible time for many people. The power hungry mass murderer Hitler kept a lot of people in fear of their lives. Many people were in hiding, including Hitler as many people detested him and his threatening scare tactics. Older Hitler and his live-in younger girlfriend Eva Braun still liked to go out for walks - incognito of course. As I was walking down the bombed out streets of Dresden I saw a woman, possibly Eva, pushing a large enclosed black buggy. I heard a man's heavily accented German voice coming out of the pram, in a sing-song way: "I feel as if I've known you my whole life," he said, "and I want to know you forever."

"It's too late now, she said, as they watched the sun sink behind clouds."
by PV

Eloise was being rather philosophical. Ever since the tryouts she and her sister watched with bated breath. It was a difficult part - not the acting, of course. Heinzie could orate and command with the best of them. But he also was keyed for action and this exemplified the life of a man who had acted heroically and decisively for his nation and his command.

It's too late now, she said, as they watched the sun sink behind the clouds. Yet a bright spot filled her imagination. Her Heinzie might just win his own Academy Award and add further testimony to the magic that was unique to dwarves alone. She hoped he was comfortable in the rolling edifice with its arm extensions.
