The interior of Linda’s home was neat and spare and cool
By RC

Linda was a very nice and a very clever girl. And she was very useful to the cast and crew of the “Playhouse on Front Street.” Whenever they needed an extra, she was there, willing and able to fill in. Her clothes always seemed to feature an element of black, and that kept it simple. Actually, all of her “roles” were static poses, but Linda was very good with poses; she could stay in one position for a very long time, and that was perfect, because this playhouse often did the very modern, symbolic  style of expressionistic stuff—and they did a lot of children’s plays besides.

Linda lived in a home which perfectly suited her abilities, and sometimes it was even featured in one of the productions. The interior of Linda’s home was neat and spare and cool. She never lacked for the sight of the moon at night either, whether it was a full moon or a crescent moon, and she liked that very much. But, if the truth be told, she didn’t always see it; that depended upon her posture. The way they left her in her home was the way she stayed all night long. In all, Linda had a very nice life—for an android.

"I want more detailed information," he told them angrily. "This report tells me nothing."
by BG

He read and he read and he read and then he read it all over again. How was he supposed to do anything with it? He sighed, and took out a notebook and proceeded to read it yet another time, taking notes. He was a well educated man, he thought to himself. How could this be? He could start doubting that his law degree and all his independent studies weren't enough to help him make sense of what he was reading. He took a break, made a cup of tea and then sat back down to read over his notes. His notes did not do much to assist him in making sense of what he had read. Ah well, it was time. He put down the notes, piled all the pages into his briefcase and left the room. As he entered the conference room, everyone looked up at him. "I want more detailed information," he told them angrily. "This report tells me nothing.

She looked painfully unsteady from the blow to her head.
by TNT

She had no name other than J4201 and when the humans transported her from the farm to the stockyard she was confused and she looked painfully unsteady from the blow to her head when she had shoved past the trailer to the fence. She tried to look casual as she leaned into it. She walked along until she found the weak spot and stood there. The others were crowded into a steel enclosure. they were mooing, protesting loudly to no avail. Humans didn't understand. Humans had no souls as far as she could tell. They took away babies, not even weaned, from mothers who cried day and night. She had heard the humans put the babies in little crates so they couldn't move. Humans were alien and cannibalistic. She smelled meat when they had barbecues and ate cows. It was horrible. She pushed hard on the fence. The fence moved from her weight. It moved and she trampled the fence wire until it almost collapsed. She mooed loudly to attract the attention of the new arrival. J4201 motioned with her head to show the others. The cows at first were oblivious. She walked over the fence into the field. There was a lot of water. The river rose after the big rains and she walked through the water towards an empty church. There she would hide for awhile and then begin the climb. The hills had grass and that was good. She hoped her friends would follow.

Maybe this was the last good thing that would ever happen to her.

Bessy Tessy had an extreme dislike for stripes - any kind of stripes. They made her brain feel dizzy and go haywire! Bessy Tessy went on an African safari with a group of people who each had their own particular kinds of phobias. They titled their group "The Traveling Phobics Anonymous". Their pink and purple tour jeep pulled up to the muddy watering hole. There, on the other side of the water hole, were a group of drinking, bloated zebras, ready to burst any moment in the hot African sun. Maybe this explosive event would be the last good thing that would ever happen to Bessy Tessy!

When she spoke, her voice sounded dull and exhausted.

Jessie started work at the Bluebell diner on September the 1st. There was snow in the mountains already. Her car sputtered a few times before the engine caught, and a spume of white smoke shot out of the exhaust. She gunned it and pulled out into the street.

By the end of the day, it was obvious that she was going to be fired. She had never done this kind of work before, but when you are flat out of money, you take anything available. Maybe she could learn, but they probably wouldn’t give her a chance when more experienced people were waiting for work. When she spoke, her voice sounded dull and exhausted. There were few tips. She spent them all on fast food.

At home, she threw her purse on the threadbare couch and sat down at the dinette table to eat her taco. Across from her, where her ex used to sit, she had placed a large Japanese doll, to distract her from his absence. He had given her the doll when he came back from Okinawa. That wasn’t all he had given her then, she thought, wadding up crumbs in the taco wrapper. Still she missed him, especially his paycheck.

She was just pushing her chair back from the table when she heard a noise. It sounded like someone clearing their throat. After a moment of stillness, she heard nothing further, so she took her wrapper to the trash can and washed her hands in the sink.

Meanwhile, the doll watched her carefully. He had waited a long time for this moment of vulnerability. His eyes followed her around the kitchen and then resumed their pointless focus as she passed on her way to the living room.
