“I never want this night to end, he thought, while looking out across the water.”
By CC

Lenny Tillman dragged his useless legs behind him as he crawled across the floor. He climbed up the sill and slid onto a stool where he could look out his window over the dingy city streets to the river beyond. Dawn tinged the buildings pink as he sipped the cup of hot gruel that Victoria Plummer had left for him before she went home from her night shift.

Victoria’s gruel was like none other. Lenny sipped it carefully and watched the streets come to life beneath him. This day would just drag by like all the others, he thought, chucking at the pun.

Lenny’s life had been revolutionized since his uncle had hired Victoria to tend him. He didn’t mind his useless legs because Victoria didn’t. In fact she would hold him up by the shoulders and they would dance around the room as she hummed Yum-Yum’s solo from the Mikado, which was all the rage in town, she told him. She was so much younger than Lenny, and he didn’t want to think about their future. As paid help, she would be gone someday. It loomed over him like a dark cloud, but he was bored with dark clouds and dared to dream things could change someday.

Well, he thought, there was just one more day to get through without her. He crawled back to his pallet and fell asleep. When he woke at suppertime he went back to the window to watch. He could see her marching up the street, her little notebook firmly in hand. I never want this night to end, he thought, while looking out across the water.

"She woke up with a terrible hangover."
by PV

Raggedy Ann was in a real dither - the toyland party had been a smash. Everybody was there, the Three Blind Mice, Bo Peep, Rumplestiltskin - everybody. Rip Van Winkle had some amazing home brew which was quaffed and quaffed with gusto. Later, waking and looking in the mirror, she wondered what Raggedy Andy looked like - probably an impressive tart. The fact that she woke up with a terrible hangover and looking like Andy didn't help.

"She ran as fast as she could after him, but he was too far ahead of her."
by RMAF

She was chasing him out of town with a big cleaver and a boomerang! And in between her words she was trying to spit at him, but the spit splashed back into her face. She yelled at the top of her lungs "You dirty scoundrel!! You jackass!! You poor excuse of a man!! You promised me a wedding ring with four diamonds but all you gave me were hungry quadruplets. Get out,"  she shouted. "Get out of this town, you oversexed liar! I hate you!"

"Simple works fine for me," he told his wife. "Keep it simple."
by GS

Every day when he got home from work, his wife harassed him about his rumpled uniform, scuffed shoes and occasional bloodstains. He didn't really want to be a policeman, but his mother had coerced him to do so after his father was killed on duty by a fanatic. She had insisted he must honor the family tradition. Albert would much have preferred to own a used book store where he could read endless wonders. After many year on the job with no promotion nor awards, he was ready to retire on his pension and finally open his bookstore. His official photograph showed him as he often felt, morose. His wife planned a big retirement party for him, partly to appease his ancient mother who still felt committed to police work.  Albert was dismayed; he did not want a big fuss made over it, he just wanted to fade away. "Simple works for me," he told his wife. "Keep it simple." Albert was overruled.

“He never found out her name, and that suited him just fine.”
By RC

He never found out her name, and that suited him just fine. Casper was a very shy kind of a guy, and he wasn’t too much for romancing the fairer sex. It wasn’t his fault, he had been raised with seven others, offspring of a very absent parent, in a tenement slum near the railroad tracks. It was only much later that he got lucky and was adopted by a rich single man who had a very fine house; it had lots of hiding places, Casper soon found. In fact, sometimes at first he even hid from Terence, who had adopted him. Terence didn’t seem to mind; he always left Casper’s food out if he missed a meal.

The big experience came for Casper when Terence adopted another “stray”. Terence had a big heart. It so happened that this time he took in one who was female. And she was not in the least shy. It seems that she had also been raised around the slums, but her experiences had been far different. She threw herself at him in a manner which he felt was quite brazen; and this girl had nails, as well. Casper had heard some of his siblings snickering a few times and talking about “rough sex”, but he had never had any idea what they meant.

Casper did the only thing he really knew how to do: he ran! His secret hiding place was one spot where that girl would never look, he thought. And he was right. After it was all over, Casper’s only worry was that he would have to sneak a dash out now and then to get to his food. Terence happened by and saw him, wondereing briefly how the two of them were doing. Poor Casper’s ears were turned back and he looked very scared.

“That’s a nice little kitty,” Terence said, soothingly. “You’ll get over it. They all do.” But the next day, the girl was mysteriously gone. Casper never learned how she had gotten out. No doubt she was on the prowl for someone more cooperative.
